EIA: How transportation fuel is priced

ByGlenn Williams | Feb 28, 2012 | 5:05 PM EST

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) is publishing the average components of fuel prices (gasoline and diesel). For regular gasoline, the cost of crude oil makes up 76 percent of the retail price. For diesel, the cost of crude oil makes up 67 percent of the retail price. The balance of the costs are in refining, distribution, marketing and taxes [and profits]. Apparently, EIA finds refining diesel is almost twice as costly as refining regular gasoline.
