She was an undergraduate, when I arrived in East Lansing, forty two years ago. She was one of the first female black belts. We worked for equality and more input into the City, the State, the University, and open access to decision making. She now runs a neighborhood center that sponsors and organizes all types of activities, including a farmer’s market into her almost downtown area where people work hard to keep a roof over their head and food on the table.
I called to tell her how thrilled I was to see her picture on a local magazine cover. She thanked me and in her exuberant and high energy conversational voice, she said, “I think things are improving. It feels like 1970 again. I feel it, I hear it. The students will bring back change and we will still be here to see it.”
