Online Brokers: What do they do? How Much does it cost?

Just2Trade wins at $2.95 but there is a lot of choice for under $5.  Just remember to ask if there is a fee to hold your Roth or IRA ,  Plus, is there a minimum number of trades per year needed to have a no-fee account.  Last night my bridge partner and I were discussing the price of buying stocks for a Roth IRA.

I use TradeKing, as you know and my partner uses Scotrade.  I decided to do a quick search to see which online trading company holds our stocks for the cheapest dollar.  I used a Kiplinger site and http://www.stockbrokers.com/reviews/cheaptrades

TradeKing (http://www.tradeking.com)

Overall score:

Costs: $4.95 stock commissions

Customer service:
Research and tools:

TradeKing is one of the smallest firms we surveyed, with just $1.4 billion in brokerage assets. It offers competitive pricing and great resources for investors interested in getting started with options. TradeKing was also the first broker to incorporate social networking into its services. However, the site’s primary focus isn’t on long-term investors, and it shows.

Best Online Brokers for 2011

Zecco (http://www.zecco.com)

Overall score:

Costs: $4.50 stock commissions
Web site usability:
Investment choices:
Customer service:
Research and tools:

We awarded Zecco top marks for costs, and we particularly like that investors with $25,000 or more in their account get ten free stock trades per month. But beyond free trades, it doesn’t have much to offer. Investment choices are limited, and the company hasn’t invested much in tools or research.

Just2Trade launched in 2007 as a venue for investors to execute cheap trades on a bare-bones platform. Its $2.50 commissions for stocks and funds are the lowest you’ll find among brokers that charge flat commissions. The company is now trying to enhance the value it offers customers by offering Morningstar’s portfolio-analysis tools and fund, stock, and ETF screeners.
